Read With Nala

Did you know that kids with reading difficulties aged 6 to 12 years can come to the library two Saturdays a month to read to a dog?

During your 15-minute session, you can read out loud to a therapy dog named Nala.

The dates of the next sessions are:

• Saturday, December 13, between 2:00 and 4:00 pm

• Saturday, January 17, between 2:00 and 4:00 pm

• Saturday, January 24, between 2:00 and 4:00 pm

What is Remembrance Day?

Often we think that war is something that happened a long time ago. In reality, war can happen at any time.

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, exists to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers from every war since World War I.  This day takes place on November 11 to recall the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.

We have worn a poppy in early November since 1921. This flower was chosen because John McCrae's World War I poem "In Flanders' Fields" mentions poppies.

Each year, at 11:00 am on November 11, we observe two minutes of silence to honour and remember the soldiers who died at war to defend our rights.

The most important wars for Canada are:
-World War I (also called the Great War) 1914-1918
-World War II (1939-1945)
-The War of the Persian Gulf (1991)
-The War in Afghanistan (2001-present)

THE GIFT OF READING: Donate a new book to an underprivileged child

In November and December, the Beaconsfield Library is participating in the GIFT OF READING program, an initiative run by the Literacy Foundation.

To participate, please buy a new children’s book (ages 0-12). Bring it to the circulation desk at the library, where you will receive a donation kit.

You can then place the book in the collection box. The books will be distributed to underprivileged children in May 2015.

Field Report: French TD Canadian Children’s Literature Awards, 2014 Edition

On Tuesday night, the three of us went to the awards ceremony for the French TD Canadian Children’s Literature Awards at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts!

What's the TD Award? It's one of the biggest prizes for Canadian children's literature. It is awarded once a year.

The English award will be given in November.

Where's Waldo at the Library?

Starting  October 1, come to the library and ask for a Where's Waldo? Scavenger Hunt Kit. This activity can be undertaken any time during the library's opening hours throughout the month of October. Just come and see the reference librarian.

Ages 3-7: Find Waldo's lost accessories in the library.

Ages 8-12: Look for some of the places Waldo has visited in his travels.

When you finish your scavenger hunt, you will be entered to win a prize!

Summer 2014: A Smashing Success!

Thank you to all the guests who came out to enjoy our summer reading party on the evening of August 13! 

Circus artist Pierre Duhaime entertained us with some fascinating acts and we gave out a lot of prizes. In addition, we unveiled the marvelous mystery quilt made by the children of Beaconsfield in partnership with the Beaconsfield Quilters' Guild. (Many thanks to its president, Suzanne Hurtubise.)
